Justin Bonsignore is heading for the final five NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at the top of the championship standings. The chase for his fourth championship continues this Saturday night, September 14, as the Whelen Modified Tour rolls to Riverhead Raceway for the Ed Partridge 256.
In honor of the late Partridge, who operated the track for many years, the Whelen Modified Tour runs this special event each September, with extra laps, and a special pit road set up in the infield for pit stops. In the two-year history of the race, Bonsignore went to Victory Lane both times. The New York native has 11 career Riverhead Raceway Tour wins, tied with Mike Ewanitsko for the most all-time. Bonsignore leads all active drivers in the category. Saturday gives him the opportunity to break the tie with Ewanitsko and stand alone as the all-time winningest Tour driver at the quarter-mile. “The Ed Partridge 256 has become a major event for our series,” Bonsignore said. “What everyone is doing at Riverhead to keep the track and the memory of Ed Partridge alive is really important for Long Island racing. The last two years, we’ve played the strategy right and had a good car at the end to be in contention to win. We will have to play all of the cards right to be there again on Saturday.” The race day schedule for Riverhead includes the drop of the green flag for the Ed Partridge 256 at 8 p.m. For those who can’t make it to the track, the event will air live on FloRacing.TV. Justin Bonsignore wrapped the Bud Mod Classic 150 on the podium Saturday night at Oswego Speedway. In the 11th race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, Bonsignore qualified the No. 51 Phoenix Communications Inc. machine in fourth spot and remained near the front of the field for the duration of the race.
After a pit stop, Bonsignore restarted on the outside of the front row, and when it all shook out, he was running second to eventual winner Patrick Emerling. Later, Matt Hirschman would also slide around and take second, but Bonsignore remained in third for the rest of the distance. The finish allowed the New York native to open his Whelen Modified Tour championship lead to five points heading for the final five races of the season. “The guys had a great pit stop and got us out in the lead of those who pitted but we restarted second there,” Bonsignore said. “I think if I could have got the lead, we could have had the track position to hold them off. All in all, it was a good night for our Phoenix Communications team.” Bonsignore and the rest of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams will be back on the track at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday, September 14.
